THE JOURNEY OF A SELF-MADE AGRIPRENEUR – SAGAR CHANDWANI

A journey of practical learning and empirical thinking led the director of Supple Agro to reach this position today. It all started years ago by a dream with open eyes observing farmers working day and night.   There was a constant notion in a young mind, thinking about an idea to overcome the challenges in agriculture. But little did he knew, he will ultimately land up becoming an “Agripreneur”, introducing advance options, connecting agriculture to this fast-moving digital world and walking at the same pace with this revolutionary world.   Since 2012, Mr. Sagar has been partially involved with the 40 years old family business of Apple export. After completing his graduation from Hansraj College, University of Delhi he started dedicating all his time to the business.   Starting the day at 5 a.m. purchasing Apples from Delhi Azadpur Mandi. His devotion towards his work could be seen by his presence in all those raining and heavy fog days. He learned about Business Techniques, Partnership, Accounting, Dedication, hard work and adapted ideas from the experiences of his family.   Finally, Mr. Sagar made his mind to move solely towards his own farming. He planned to use unconventional ways of farming and introducing new approaches to growing fruits and vegetables. To get more insights on his ideas he moved ahead with some academic training from “The Institute of Horticulture Technology” and “The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI)” under the guidance of Mr. Bhaskar Rao, Partner Supple Agro.   Since the foundation was now made with experiences and learning. Mr. Sagar understood “this is the right time to launch his venture”. He started his farming career in the year 2015 on a small land at Sonipat, Haryana by using hydroponic techniques. The initial years were challenging, full of rolling and turning down. But when you are determined to achieve goal, you become unstoppable!   And with the persistent practice today, Supple Agro own farms in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh growing various exotic, super exotic vegetables and fruits using unconventional and sustainable ways of farming. LOCALISATION VS GLOBALISATION

BRIJESH GOYAL CHAIRMAN, CHAMBER OF TRADE & INDUSTRY There is plenty of evidence that concerned consumers prefer localisation, promoting products which are distinctive goods made with local ingredients, creating sustainable local employment and reducing the need for transport. On the other hand, globalisation has led to global supply chains which enable specialisation, more jobs in low-skilled assembly lines in low-cost emerging economies, economies of scale due to access to much larger markets, and consumers benefit from much lower prices for better products. Excerpts from an interview with Brijesh Goyal, Chairman Chamber of Trade & Industry (CTI)… In the wake of corona crisis and the escalated tensions at the borders, it becomes the need of the day to hit China economically and give boost to the Indian Manufacturing and Trade by simultaneously ensuring no harm to the Indian economy. CTI has written a letter to Hon’ble PM Modi and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal and President, Subhash Khandelwal said that China is not only the creator of the Corona pandemic but is also the biggest enemy of our country. Brijesh Goyal said weakening Chinese economy and reducing the dependence of Chinese goods in India is very important. In 2019-20, India has imported goods worth about 65 billion dollars from China. India is a very big export market for China. This is something, which cannot be done overnight but a long term and a strategic plan has to be drawn. This has to be done in 3 phases. Short Term Restricting Chinese goods that are already made in India or goods that can easily made in India with existing facilities or goods whose import restrictions won’t have any impact on the Indian economy. There are many such items that are imported in large numbers from China. But, these items are already made in India and the Indian manufacturer needs little support to substitute the Chinese Import for these specific items. Toys, Textiles, Footwear, Electronic & Electric Items, Cosmetic, Gift Items, Watches, Clothing, Furniture, Lighting, Furnishing Items, Kitchen Goods, Hand Bags, Fashion Apparel, Gems & Jewelry, Stationery, Health Products, Holi Items, Diwali items etc. Import on these items should be immediately prohibited. Medium Term Goods that can be manufactured by upgrading the existing facilities or by importing the required machinery or by technology transfer. In this context all local industries falling under MSME categories should be supported for the required technology, finance and support required enhancing the scale. Upgrading the existing facilities for achieving the required technology levels and the economies of scale like auto components, machinery, engineering goods etc. Long Term Special trade specific groups to be formed that should include senior Bureaucrats & representatives of specific trade to have in-depth study of the trade and its potential. It involves making India a big-manufacturing hub for domestic & export requirements. To Encourage the Local manufacturing Government should simplify the norms that create ease in doing business. There should be trade specific zones to enable suitable infrastructure according to the needs of the industry.   CTI General Secretary Vishnu Bhargava & Vice President Navdeep Malhotra recommends few immediate steps that need to be implemented at the earliest: If India starts discouraging Chinese goods, it can come with hidden routes in the market. Thus, it requires a law to strictly mention “COUNTRY OF ORIGIN” on the packaging of products, as this will create transparency. This will prevent European & American brands to dump “Made in China” products in India. There should be difference in import tariff between the goods that are completely packed, printed or branded against the semi knockdown kits. This will encourage assembling of the components in India thereby reducing the import bills and will create employment for Indian labor. Stop giving Roads; Rail & Infrastructure projects to Chinese companies stop giving construction projects to Chinese companies. BNB

BACK TO THE ROOTS WITH LASSIS OF INDIA – RADHA BHATIA

Seventy-four recipes of making lassi. That’s something most of the people have unheard of. The idea that came out of compulsion has made the food lovers really enthralled. The seasoned travel trade entrepreneur, Radha Bhatia has penned a book titled “Lassis of India- Smoothies With a Twist”. And the most cherished part of the book is that it has bagged the ‘Best in the world 2020’ award in the category ‘Drinks With No Alcohol’, Food & Drink Culture at the coveted Gourmand World Award. The book previously was the winner from India in the Gourmand World Awards in the category ‘Non-Alcoholic Drinks’.   The author, Radha Bhatia is an entrepreneur in the travel and trade domain with over 45 years of significant industry presence. She decided to write a book on ‘Lassis of India’ to reach out to the younger generation who are influenced by western culture and always talk about smoothies. To encourage the children to read the book it has been titled- ‘Lassis of India- Smoothies with a Twist’. The book unfurls with traditional ‘Panchamrit’ and its historical background citing the author’s passion about Indian culture and cooking.   The book is a compilation of 74 recipes of lassi curated by her, which includes traditional recipes from different states of India to modern-day smoothies. The book is just not a compilation of recipes but is a grandmother’s labour of love as it incorporates five generations of stories, wisdom and kitchen secrets. The book is an amalgamation of recipes and stories and has undergone extensive research that explores Indian cultural roots, local customs, climate and cuisines, featuring a compilation of 17 traditional recipes from various states blending with the local food and climate. The traditional recipes comprise the ever-popular Punjabi ‘Meethi Lassi’ to the ‘Talicha More’ of Tamil Nadu; each with their unique taste and health benefits.   The other 57 recipes are lassis with a twist – prepared with herbs, fruits and nuts, which appeal to a younger generation, keeping the taste buds of children in mind. Since these lassis or smoothies are freshly prepared and don’t have any harmful preservatives, they are tasty as well as healthy. All the recipes in the book are simple to follow and intended for those who love to cook at home. As the author explains, “By spreading the word about these healthy beverages, I hope to pass on this priceless legacy to the new generation and help them live a healthier life.” Further talking about the importance of indigenous products she adds, “When I was growing up, it was difficult to imagine a meal without a tall glass of lassi. The yogurt based elixir was not a peripheral element of our dining culture, but occupied centre-stage. My eyes lit-up each time I looked at my grandmother’ Smt. Chandra kishori Bhatia, fondly called Ammaji of Mussoorie, churning milk in large handi with a madhani (wooden churner) which we are soon introducing in our property.   Also talking about the initiative taken by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be vocal for local, she adds that now the entire world is going to look up to India for its food, culture & tradition. Indian food & ayurveda will catch the world’s attention in the years to come. For instance turmeric, basmati rice, spices and all kinds of herbs, all are home grown, which the world enjoys. In my book, we have talked about traditional recipes, which is particularly meaningful in the current COVID pandemic since the traditional recipes contain herbs and spices that are natural immunity boosters. Parents can encourage children to try out these simple, health enriching recipes with ingredients that are readily available in every Indian kitchen. This will not only keep them engaged, but also help them develop a taste for healthy beverages.”  So, let’s have your romance continue with the Indian tradition of yogurt drinks.
