A People Person – Kausar Jahan

A people person in every sense of the word, she’s endearing and empathetic. Equally adept at connecting with the masses and speaking their language or being a charming conversationalist when rubbing shoulders with Delhi’s elite. She is Kausar Jahan, born into what some might see as an easy, privileged life yet the reality is that she has faced some of life’s toughest challenges along the way. Having lost both her parents to the terrible pandemic wave that hit last year, she found herself in unprecedented circumstances overnight. Not only were her personal pillars gone, their family business which was already heavily impacted by the economic climate at the time, had lost its proprietors. It is admirable how she has held her own amidst this terrible tragedy, coming out more determined than ever to face the future with courage and optimism. Her late mother Begum Fatima Husain belonged to an aristocratic lineage, with great grandfather Nawab Fakhr Ul Mulk Bahadur, Hyderabad’s leading Shia nobleman of the Nizam era. Her paternal ancestry consists of bureaucrats, academic heavy weights and political office bearers. As she puts it, “I am blessed to be born with such illustrious pedigree, however the world we live in is all about the here and the now. All that matters is who we are today and our contribution to society. Actions must speak louder than words.” She has travelled the world and has had many opportunities to settle overseas, but her heart resides in the motherland. Kausar Jahan is a self-confessed nationalist who has worn many hats professionally, from being a local entrepreneur to social activist. Long-time associate of leading women empowerment NGO Sampurna, she has also recently joined the Bharatiya Janta Party and beams with pride when talking about what she calls “a golden or more accurately, saffron opportunity.” Fiercely motivated by her goals, making an impact through public service is what drives her. It is this burning ambition that gives her purpose and fuels her passion to help empower women from minority communities and more broadly support women in need of guidance. Coming from a cosmopolitan family herself, Kausar believes in the uniting power of humanity. As she says, “There is no shortage of negative news surrounding us humans, so the least we can do is try to make our own positive story, even if it is through the small changes we may bring about in one person’s life around us.” Her personality has been carved out of her upbringing as an Indian First and is blended with immense pluralistic values. She endeavours to carry on the process of taking along everyone towards evolution of positivity and camaraderie among all. Her association with the largest political party is backed by her commitment to contribute to the nation taking along all constituents. Her generosity, kindness and personable nature makes you warm up to her instantly, however behind the gentle exterior lies the soul of a fighter. Dynamic, resilient and loved by those who cross her path, Kausar Jahan has all the makings of an emerging leader, undoubtedly a woman to watch.

SUSTAINABLE JEWELLERY & GENDER BENDER

As fashion and beauty cultivates an air of gender neutrality, Eurumme collaborates with the industry’s extraordinary talents to envision inclusivity through sustainable jewellery   While gender bender and sustainable fashion campaigns do the rounds, designers are often caught balancing a double-edged sword – on one end they’re criticized for displaying blandness for industry acceptance, labeling their work as boring and outdated, and on the other hand they’re condemned for alienating a huge audience that strays away from the traditional system of dual genders.   With the rise of gender-fluid fashion and beauty, the industry is looking beyond stereotypical marketing, packaging and even products. Young consumers, specifically millennial are increasingly embracing brands that are gender neutral.   We’re pleased to introduce an assorted range of jewellery by Eurumme that seeks inspiration from environmental consciousness and sustainability and can easily transform to showcase the spirit of gender inclusivity. With a substantial shift from rigidity to acceptance of androgynous fashion in the local market, Eishita Puri, Creative Director, Eurumme, innovates androgynous jewellery by tweaking the trend and launching gender inclusive jewellery.   Breaking all social norms, the designers takes a giant leap, as she initiates gold-plated, sustainable jewellery that can be adorned with panache by all genders alike!   Handcrafted by fellow artisans and made using locally sourced materials, this assortment of jewels is created keeping in mind – progression in the modern times.   It is with great pride that we announce Eurumme’s collaboration with various renowned names of the fashion industry. Each of these personalities has their own unique take on the rise of gender fluidity and inclusion and has conveyed their manifestation by donning jewellery from the brand’s revived collections.   These popular artists namely, “Non-conforming, valid, liberation & personal choice of one’s life.” :  Eshwar Log (make-up & hair artist)   “Gender Fluidity has been a long time coming and I’m glad it’s been given the importance it deserves. People should be able to make their own fashion choices, there can’t be a limit to this. Being inclusive is imperative and gives people the freedom to express themselves better. Infact Androgynous styling is one of my favourites.”   : Shreeja Rajgopal (celebrity stylist)     “Gender fluidity is something that we grow up with in the Indian culture and if you look at Hindu mythology in particular you see so many examples- while the Pandavas were in exile,  Arjun dressed up as a woman to hide his identity and played the part of a woman for a very long time; Hindu mythology also teaches us about Shiv and Shakti —they’re one energy and one identity. On the streets we come across eunuchs or kinnars on the daily known to possess other worldly powers. To me gender fluidity is not just an expression or a subject of inclusivity; it’s a lifestyle that we all are part of. One day we feel more masculine and the next day more feminine. We just have to embrace the best of both and put it to good use.” : Mohit Rai (Creative Director & fashion consultant: Grain Consultancy)     “A large part of my wardrobe is androgynous, like this poncho that I am wearing – a modern derivation of a unisex staple that is regarded as traditional clothing in many regions worldwide. Similarly, jewellery has been worn by women and men across cultures and tribes, and today, it is a form of personal expression that should not be limited by gender. These beautiful upcycled earrings from Eurumme, which were once a piece of discarded cardboard packaging, show that the possibilities are endless once we think outside the box of convention.” : Sohiny Das (Creative Director & fashion consultant: Grain Consultancy)     “Only you know who you are born to be and you need to be free as a person and accepting of your own self. Gender isn’t something that should stop you from working towards your goals, love, and acceptance. Gender doesn’t define love, talent, or intelligence.” : Pranay Jaitly & Shounak Amonkar (Creative Directors & fashion consultants: Who Wore What When)   “There’s no such thing as too masculine or too feminine for me when it comes to style and fashion at least. I wear women’s clothing all the time and can rock a tuxedo at the same time. Blurred lines actually work best in some cases.” : Tejeshwar Sandhoo (fashion & lifestyle blogger and influencer),   I have gone above and beyond to style Eurumme jewellery as a reflection of their personal beliefs regarding gender inclusivity. Their undaunted confidence is worthy of applause as they do not shy away from the conventions of society, instead believe in voicing their opinions with candid creativity.   History has witnessed that the fashion industry has been constantly accused of ignoring and devaluing the marginalised. Off late, we’ve seen tremendous developments, especially those related to gender fluidity, for example, cheering androgynous and transgender models, promoting gender neutral fashion weeks, campaigns and concepts, etc.   Through this initiative, Eurumme hopes to make a similar breakthrough!

By working together we can make a positive global change   How a constant support from your father or any particular person inevitable in your journey? I am very fortunate that I have constant support from my father and mother, I view this as a blessing. Despite our physical distance, I know that when I require support from my parents despite night or day, they will always be there to support me. I believe that it is through their prayers, that I am with you all today.   I was supported by my father from a young age to carry out community service, excel in my education and pursue work in the media.  The love my parents have for me is unconditionally and they understand my pure intentions to serve the world.  My parents have always trusted me to make the right decisions in my endeavours, they appreciate me as a person and my goals in life. This element touches my heart, because my parents will only support truth and justice. With the knowledge that my parents are always there to support me, provides me with the strength to embark on my journey to achieve my goals with happiness and immense motivation.   How did that constant motivation give you the courage to fight against all odds and achieve your dream? The constant loving motivation that I have been fortunate to receive through my parent’s support, has created firm  self-belief and confidence.  This in turn has facilitated my progress onto achieving goals that seemed impossible to me. When I underwent serious health battles in my life, my parents never gave up hope.  This fuelled my motivation and progression towards recovery, together with my faith, positivity and self-belief.  Through this traumatic experience I learnt the true value and preciousness of my life through a different perspective.  Currently, I feel very blessed to have been given the opportunity to rise every morning and transcend towards my dream of serving mankind.  I spend every waking minute expressing gratitude for this wonderful gift that we call life. This reminds me of a quote by Aga Khan III, that my beloved father-in-law used to motivate me with ‘struggle is the meaning of life.’  This quote has created an imprint in my heart helping my motivation when I encounter struggles. It has provided me with the realisation that every individual faces struggles every day within our lives, but this struggle makes us stronger.  This realisation is enough to provide me with the motivation to fight against the odds in life and ‘serve mankind until my last breath’ which is my dream and biggest achievement.   Your personal bonding with your father or anyone in particular? I view the personal bonding with my father as very special and unique. He is not only my father, but he is my friend and biggest supporter, just as I am his. We have the type of bond where we can guide and inspire each other.  I was the long awaited first daughter in my family, after a whole generation of boys. I think an automatic special bond was formed from my birth, that was filled with deep love and affection flourishing to present day .  I am truly blessed to share this amazing father daughter bond; each moment is precious in life therefore I cherish it.   Any lesson which you u have embedded in yourself which makes you a good citizen of your country? I feel that it is imperative to live by good ethics and values; being respectful, trustworthy, honest, compassionate and responsible. I believe that it is our duty to provide service to humanity and give back to society.  This can be achieved through voluntary work within our capacity and obey the law. These are qualities that I have embedded within myself with the aim of being a good citizen.  I feel that every individual can aspire to be the best citizen, who can be attained through adhering to the notion of: Always treat others how you wish to be treated.  Together with abiding by these mentioned principles, I seek to understand diverse viewpoints and aim to build bridges between communities, cultivate tolerance, peace and harmony. We should remember that there is strength in diversity, therefore always treat others with respect. I have personally ensured that I do not forget my culture and heritage as this is a vital component of who I am.  Residing within a multicultural society, has allowed easy integration and acceptance within society globally. If we all aspire to be good role models and help each other, through our good intentions and actions identified through, proper behavior, trust and understanding; we can aim to live in a world filled with peace and happiness.   Being a daughter how do you support your father when he is not in his positive frame of mind / dilemma? Both my father and father-in-law are generally positive individuals. They always strive to turn every negative situation into a positive.  However, we are human, and I cannot expect both my father and father-in-law to be positive all the time.  This is because, the world that we live in is ever changing and the challenges that we encounter in life alter. Therefore, I gently remind them both, that they are both worried about the future consequences of an event, something that has not happened yet.  If something has not happened yet, then why do we worry about it? Yes, we can discuss contingency plans, if we know that something may affect our future, but that is positive.  I also remind both that the past has gone, and we cannot change it, thus possessing a negative mindset is futile. We can learn from our past experiences and from it create a better future. I feel that by creating positive energy around my father and my father-in-law during his difficult times; by being cheerful and positive; the distressing task of solving a dilemma or transforming negative mindsets becomes easier for both
